Welcome to my portfolio of photographs from Malaysia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, and Panama.  Most of these photos were taken in August, September, and October of 2014.

This link shows the camera and equipment that I use to take my photos and videos.

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Kuala Lumpur City Centre and the Petronas twin towers

The PETRONAS twin towers and the Kuala Lumpur City Centre park and fountains.  They were the tallest buildings in the world from 1998 to 2004 and remain the tallest twin towers in the world replacing World Trade Center in New York.
Kuala Lumpur has experienced rapid development in recent years. Here, the Petronas Twin Towers rise behind construction at the Kuala Lumpur City Centre.

Hong Kong - The cityscape at night

Here are some photos I took while visiting Hong Kong in September. Hong Kong, a British colony since 1842, was handed over to China in 1997. Under a joint agreement that set the conditions for the former British colony’s return to China in 1997, Hong Kong was promised significant autonomy for 50 years under a formula called "one country, two systems.” It was designated as a "special administrative region", which made Hong Kong very different from mainland China in the way in which it is governed. Recent decisions by the government in Beijing have threatened this autonomy. As we have seen, the people have spoken, and the protests in October 2014 have demonstrated that many people want to keep their individuality as a former British colony with a strong desire for pro-democracy. Hong Kong is certainly a beautiful place.

A view of downtown Hong Kong and Kowloon (on the other side of Victoria Harbour) from Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island. The tall bright white building in the back is the new 118-story International Commerce Center that was completed in 2012.  The view was especially good from the peak that night as a typhoon that passed through the day before cleared the air of haze and smog, a normal occurrence for Hong Kong.

Singapore - Marina Bay Sands Laser and Light Show

The following photos from Singapore and the Formula 1 contained moving subjects and lasers.  All of the photos were taken with the camera on a tripod, but some of the photos still required a fast shutter speed, and as much light as possible.  I increased the film speed to allow for more light, used a shutter speed that was fast enough to keep from blurring the subjects, and then added as much depth of field as possible.  The result were photos that did not contain blurred moving subjects and good contrast, but with noticeable noise [like film grain], and an overall lack of sharpness.  There was a lot of humidity in the air, and at times, it appeared as fog.  There was also a significant amount of smoke in the air due to illegal land-clearing in Sumatra and Kalimantan, Indonesia resulting in hundreds of peatland and forest fires.  The smoke hit record levels on a few of the days.

Singapore - Beautiful at night

This photo shows the view from the KU DE TA skybar at the top of the Marina Bay Sands skypark platform.

"Marina Bay Sands is an integrated resort fronting Marina Bay in Singapore. Developed by Las Vegas Sands, it is one of the world's most expensive stand-alone developments costing about $8 billion. It opened in June 2010.  The resort features a 2,561 room hotel, a convention center, shops at Marina Bay Sands mall, a museum, two large theatres, seven celebrity chef restaurants, two floating Crystal Pavilions, an ice skating rink, and the world's largest atrium casino with almost 500 tables and over 2,500 slot machines.  The complex is topped by a 1,050 foot long boat shaped platform that contains a SkyPark with an observational deck, garden, swimming pool, and four restaurant/bars, all which sit on top of three 57-story buildings housing the hotel rooms."

Fukuoka, Japan - Festivals at night

The Nakasu Lantern Festival

This image, taken in HDR at the Hakata Lantern Festival, turned out interesting with the blurred subjects.  In low light, HDR photography requires the camera to be on a tripod, as it automatically takes two photos in sequence, and uses slow shutter speeds.  I handheld the camera here, and this was the result.

Panama Canal - Celebración de los 100 años del Canal de Panamá.

August 15, 1914 marked the first transit by a ship, the SS Ancón, through the Panama Canal.  August 15, 2014 was the 100th anniversary of this historic event.  These photos are from the public celebration at the Miraflores Locks that took place the day after the anniversary, on August 16.  Residents of Panama, and some tourists, attended the nighttime event, with music and entertainment, while watching cargo ships pass through the locks.
